Packing My Hospital Bag (Second Time Around and Slightly Wiser)

Second baby, second hospital bag — this time I’m packing prepared, practical and slightly traumatised by a Tesco Express supermarket sweep with our first baby.

Packing your hospital bag feels like one of those symbolic pregnancy moments. It’s practical, yes — but it also quietly says, this is getting real now.

With my first, I thought I was prepared. I had a small carry-on case neatly packed. What I didn’t factor in was the “extra bits” that didn’t quite fit. The loose ends. The last-minute additions. The snack situation.

Which resulted in my husband doing a panic supermarket sweep in Tesco Express after my waters had broken — while I sat in the car having contractions — and us arriving at the hospital with what can only be described as a slightly chaotic carrier bag of Lucozade and Bourbon biscuits.

Romantic, it was not.

This time, I’ve been warned I may not be quite as “blessed” with leisurely snack-stop timing (precipitous labour perks), so I’ve approached packing with more intention.

And with a busy two-year-old running around, I also knew I needed this done properly — early, organised, and ready.

Maybe I’ve overpacked — but this time, I’m choosing calm over chaos

What Size Case?

For me, this is personal preference. First time, I used a small carry-on case… and then stacked additional bags on top. It worked, but it felt disjointed.

This time, I’ve gone for one larger case that fits everything neatly inside. No juggling. No loose bags. Just one place for my things.

I’ve also packed a separate bag just for drinks and snacks. Not a Tesco Express bag this time — we’re upgrading.

I’d rather have it and not need it than be wishing for something mid-contraction.

I’m a list person (in theory at least), so I split everything into sections:

  • Clothes for me
  • Clothes for baby
  • Baby Changing
  • Toiletries
  • “Stuff” (the random but necessary category)
  • On-the-day additions
  • Snacks list
  • Husband’s list (if he wants to be organised…)

It sounds like a lot written down. And maybe it is. But last time, I was only in hospital around 16 hours from arrival to birth, checks and discharge. I may well have overpacked hospital clothes especially.

The thing is — no two births are the same.

Just because last time was quick doesn’t mean this time will be. I’d rather feel prepared than under-packed and unsettled.

Clothes for Me – This is where I probably overthink it. Hospital is not a fashion show. But comfort matters.

Clothes for Baby– The tiniest, sweetest part of packing. Folding those tiny clothes never gets old. It’s one of the few moments in pregnancy where everything feels calm and hopeful.

Baby Changing– Simple, practical, ready.

Toiletries– Last time, I underestimated how much I’d want to feel human. This time: Even if I’m only there a short time, being able to freshen up makes such a difference. My labour essentials are also on here, Neom spray and Massage stick.

The Snack Bag (Trauma-Informed Packing)– This time, I am prepared. No emergency supermarket run required.

Husband’s List (Optional Participation)– He may or may not follow the list. That’s between him and himself.

Overpacked or Prepared?

Maybe I have overpacked. Maybe I’ll use half of it. Maybe I’ll be home within 24 hours again.

But this time, I feel calm knowing it’s ready.

With a two-year-old at home, I don’t have the luxury of last-minute scrambling. The bag is packed. The snacks are sorted. The list is ticked. And that alone feels like a small win.

If You’re Packing Yours… Whether it’s your first baby, second, or beyond — there’s no “right” way to pack a hospital bag.

Some people go minimal. Some go prepared-for-every-scenario. Both are valid.

This is simply what feels right for me this time.

Prepared. Organised. Slightly snack-focused. And hopefully, no Tesco Express carrier bags in sight.
