When a Girls’ Night Out Turns Into the Self-Care Night You Didn’t Know You Needed

A cancelled girls’ night out turned into 11 hours of sleep, uninterrupted takeaway, and the kind of self-care that quietly changes everything.

You know those plans you’re really looking forward to — the ones that involve adult conversation, no interruptions, and someone else getting the drinks, food and snacks?

That was supposed to be my Saturday.

A girls’ night. Catching up. Laughing. Putting the world to rights.
And then… it was cancelled.

Now normally, that would come with a little disappointment -But this time? Something unexpected happened.

I leaned into it.

Instead of rearranging or feeling flat about it, I gave myself permission to do… nothing. And honestly? It was glorious.

Self-care isn’t always going out — sometimes it’s turning everything off and letting yourself rest.

By 6pm I was already in pyjamas — the good ones — hair washed, a luxury shower ticked off with full body moisturising (no rushed elbows here), a face mask on, eye patches doing whatever magical things eye patches claim to do, and zero plans to leave the house.

Takeaway arrived.
Uninterrupted.
No sharing.

I curled up on the sofa, watched a film from start to finish without pausing once (a modern miracle), and let my brain properly switch off. No scrolling with one eye. No half-listening. Just quiet, comfort, and being off duty.

Then came the real gift: sleep.
Not broken sleep (well apart from needing a wee- I’ll thank pregnancy for that)
Not “one ear open” sleep.
But a long, deep, uninterrupted aside from toilet break and a whole 11 hours of it.

I woke up feeling like a completely new person. Rested. Calm. Lighter. Honestly? A million dollars.

Would it have been lovely to see my friends? Of course it would. I love them. But the cancellation gave me something I didn’t realise I was craving quite so deeply — total rest. And friendships change after you become a mum and again when you are pregnant. Life happens and that’s ok.

At six months pregnant, this kind of self-care hit differently.

Self-care doesn’t always look like nights out, social plans, or doing more. Sometimes it’s the opposite. Sometimes it’s choosing stillness. Choosing comfort. Choosing rest without guilt.

And the cherry on top? Grandma had my little girl, and they had the most gorgeous time together. Everyone’s cup was full — just in very different ways.

So here’s your reminder, if you need it:

-A night in can be just as nourishing as a night out.
-Cancelled plans don’t always need replacing.
-And listening to what your body actually needs? That’s self-care too.

Last night wasn’t what I planned — but it was exactly what I needed
